-Pre-release review by JLH Design-
I decided to give myself the inquisitive honour and intriguing pleasure of listening to the album " A Slow, Painful Life", written by the ineffable lords of Drone, Lunarsapian.
From the first track, it sets the ethos for the entirety of the album, a darkened twilight of shrouded, dying stars in a pale moonlit sky; beautiful, yet engulfed in a sense of impending fear. It's resonation and melody, synchronises with a vast majority of genres. It has a presence that is alien, yet familiar, like the vocabulary of the insane; calming and dissonant in unison. The impressions so far were good, and as I ventured deeper, they only increased.
Following quickly came the track "Nocturnal Liberation". The track's sudden change in atmosphere and genre impression awoke a fire inside me that yearned for more. The sound was that of pure emotion; drowned in distortion that represented anger. The vocals sounded like the bellowing shrieks of demons themselves, gathered at a Mass. It was haunting, and the reverb and delay carried the sonent on the winds. The guitar work had a drone ethos, which is prominent throughout, and which compliments the title of the album; it can relate to you, in an essence that we are all in a repeated cycle of anguish until we fester within our pine solitary confinement.
I then followed up with " The Ever Winding Path". This song became one of my favourites. The song is a piano instrumental, accompanied by the natural sounds of rain. The composition of this piece was soothing and beautiful, and captured the emotion of both negative and positive aspects. As the piano played, The calling of the Mega Therion, carried along the melody like a hypnotic rhythm of the elders, enhanced by his gnosis. This overall, completed the track, and allowed it to have its own presence within the album. It allowed it to become the beacon of light within this darkened path the album foreshadowed.
Following from this tranquility came "Warriors of Nione". immediately, the presence of traditional Death Metal came about, decimating the peace, and pathing a way of hate with its ashes. The riffs were raw, hard, and felt deeply with the necessary lament and misanthropy. The vocals were a mixture of thunder and lightning; sharp and echoing. It sends you to a pit, into the heart of a beast, and the screams are the pulse that, to me, syncopated with my own.
Next came the self titled track, which was the epitome of masterpiece. It was first introduced by a string serenade, accompanied by the haunting of a guitar melody; as soon as I got familiar with the sound, the vocals and guitar rhythm incinerated the comfort, and rained blood upon the piece. It was a glorious display of misanthropy and hate in its purest form. The vocals resembled the same sound of early Second Wave Black Metal; raw, dirty, and full of contempt. It went hand in hand with the song perfectly. As it continued to go along, the volume started to gradually increase, to me it emphasised the growing hate and pain building higher like licking embers, evolving into a roaring fire in which we all are consumed. The distinct melody that plays over the rhythm surrounding the ending gave the song a new rebirth, bringing the essence of doom crashing down onto me as the vocals signified its atmosphere. The song left me speechless, as pure emotion like this has no words, but a form. A form that is forever present and dormant, and here, it was unleashed.
Overall, this album,in my opinion, was one of the best I've heard in a long time. For those who feel the need to venture deep into the chasms of which many fear to tread into its darkened path, this will be your torch to illuminate the way. It is emotion. It is hate. And we all march To its drum.
